This workshop provides a review and update of legal and ethical concerns for the drug and alcohol and mental health counselor or social worker. National and state codes of ethics will be reviewed and mandatory reporting laws will be discussed in detail. Risk reduction will be examined including informed consent, record keeping, treatment planning, termination, and suggestions for documentation with high risk clients. Attendees will leave this workshop with a solid review and update and will be armed with practical tools and sample forms that can be put into practice immediately to meet regulatory requirements, promote competence and reduce risk in counseling practice. Domestic Abuse and Spousal Abuse*
Health care providers have a responsibility to consider, recognize, evaluate and offer appropriate treatment or referrals to individuals and families living in violent relationships.
This workshop will provide information about the latest statistics, research, and treatment issues associated with intimate partner violence as well as how it affects children who witness violence in the family. Ethical and legal issues regarding treatment of victims and abusers will be discussed. Cultural, psychosocial and socioeconomic factors will be explored along with theories about cycles of violence, review of laws protecting victims and issues surrounding mandated treatment for batterers. Screening, intervention and assessment tools will be provided along with a review of signs, symptoms and medical problems that can be overlooked in victims, including strangulation. HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Update*
This workshop is a comprehensive review of the history, epidemiology, transmission, and treatment of HIV infection. The most current treatment interventions will be reviewed along with counseling issues including psychosocial crisis points during the course of HIV/AIDS infection, legal and ethical decision-making, and facing death and dying issues with your clients. Powerful audio visual segments are included in this training. Effects of Trauma on Child Development
Trauma during childhood and adolescence can lead to future disorders by affecting the individual's maturation and development. Depending on the number, nature, and pattern of traumatic events, many youngsters, especially those exposed to sudden, unexpected, man-made violence, will develop Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Others will have a range of PTSD symptoms, behavior disorders, anxiety, phobias, and depressive disorders.
Citing the research advances and work of Bruce Perry, Ph.D. and others, this workshop will provide information about the latest statistics and treatment issues associated with children who witness violence in the family. Disorders of Children and Adolescents
This two-day workshop provides information about the most common mental health disorders in children (Depression, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder), an introduction to other disorders of children (Aspbergers, Autism, Developmental Disorders) and a review of the medications and psychotherapies used in treatment. Participants will enhance their ability to work with children who have mental health conditions and will improve their ability to educate families about the current treatment strategies. Substance Abuse and Mental Illness: Integrating Treatment
This workshop is designed to introduce substance abuse counselors, case managers, probation officers, parole officers and criminal justice staff to the most common psychiatric disorders. The course includes an introduction to the DSM IV-TR. Diagnostic criteria, assessment, treatment planning preferred treatment guidelines (including com on medications) will be outlined for Mood Disorders (including Bipolar Illness, Major Depression and Dysthymia), Anxiety Disorders, Personality Disorders, Substance Use Disorders and Psychosis. Integrated treatment guidelines and patient teaching tools will be discussed along with the challenges of truly integrating treatment in a variety of service settings. | |
